Hit the Ground Runnin'!
Here we go! We pick up equipment in less than 3 hours! I'm extremely excited to put all our planning to work. We're as ready as we're gonna be. I'm looking forward to how we will deal with different issues that will arise. I think that's when we'll really be able to shine.
Okay, enough of that. Let's do this thing! I'd just like to say THANKS! to all the crew for getting us this far. All right, now I'm ready. Yeah!

Come one, Come all! To the meeting in Room 214 in Cheever Hall!
Bring your questions, your comments, your concerns and let's get the rest of these issues addressed this weekend. We are so close, and for all the preparation we've done, we're still not quite there. Odds and ends need to be attended to and I don't want to miss a detail.
I will be bringing a list of items that need to be addressed - be prepared to problem solve, brainstorm, and pick up speed, we're almost there!
Bring your assistants! Bring your P.A.s! PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE!!!
Roxanne (Chellie) will likely be attending our meeting, and Tina Buckingham has been invited as well.
LEAD OR BE LUNCH!

Stunt Choreography
Oh the fun we are having! We spent two hours hitting Trevor and then Krystyna with Camdon's car - talk about adrenaline. I think we have some planned shots that will work very nicely for the effect we're after. Come to Friday's workshop to see takes!
T-shirts are in - Don't miss this Friday's meeting - Cheever room 214 at 4:00pm.
Kudos to Ben Robinson for working double time on Rhanda's film and then seeking out props for us - Thank you so much Ben for all your hard work.
Jere got us the orange jumpsuit!
Thanks to Camdon we will be shooting our morgue scene in the actual county morgue.
Austin Shelton (designed our shirts) will be returning from Colorado with some very nice toys for us to play with from Colorado. We will likely need your talents in photoshop again Austin.
Department heads - you know who you are by now - make your on-set checklists and compile your "stuff" - be ready because come Monday, I want this production to reflect PREPARATION! I want us to be waiting on talent, not talent waiting on us - as much as possible.
Ben and Jere are going to need some support through this, especially now that Jere is playing Adrian - Know a P.A.? Bring'em!
This may sound like I'm preaching to the choir - but rest, take your vitamins, clear your minds, and arrive on set prepared to pull together as a TEAM!!!
In the event I do not find another Layla between now and next Monday - I will be taking Layla's role. This would mean Camdon would have to step into the Directorial role for certain scenes. This really is a team effort. I will have to explore and expose a kind of raw pain I've only written, meant for a seasoned actress to divulge to the camera.
YOU can do this, I can do this, WE can do this!

Go Team!
Greetings fellow artists!
Jere Sallee is Adrian. Chellie Newman is Roxanne and Tara Ward is coming to the reading tonight to read for Layla. Looking at our actresses we may have to see if it is feasible (time-wise for Neine) to switch our teen girls around.
T-shirts are done and will be distributed next week - I'm so excited!
Please check the props list! If there is something you can provide - let Ben know. He's working so very hard to get us ready for production.
I want to thank you all for your pre-production support and tell you I have complete confidence in you. This is really turning out to be a collaborative effort, everyone's project.
Thanks to all!

Get Ready for Friday!
RRRROOOOOOAAAARING into the week - full steam ahead. 13 days until production - WOOHOO!!!!
This Friday Camdon, Peter, and I are going to give everyone 10 to 15 minutes to get into your departments and discuss developments and what still needs to be done. As hard as we are working - there is still so much to do - crazy!
I have high expectations that every department head will come prepared to conduct their own mini - meeting for that 10 - 15 minutes. Unfortunately Trevor will not be able to attend this meeting but we will bring discussion & info from the Tuesday meeting for those post people who cannot attend that.
Camdon, Peter, and I will join your mini-meetings to ask questions, be asked questions, take notes, and get a feel for what additional preparation needs to take place. Please come prepared with your thoughts and ideas. If we can accomplish more in the friday meeting for each department - we don't have to have as many other meetings - I hope.
Remember - we'll be in Cheever Hall Rm 214 again.
Welcome back Alex W.!

Roxanne stirs cooking, shredded meat on the woodstove, cell phone to her ear.
ROXANNE
Come alone Lay.
EXT. DESERTED PRAIRIE HIGHWAY - DAY
Gloved, Layla fingers a photo stapled across Adrian's face. Standing behind her, Roxanne grimaces.
Layla rips the photo from his face, a mass of cooked shredded flesh spills from his mouth with a low moan.
Layla stands, pulling the gun from her holster and aiming it at Adrian's head.
Roxanne steps between them.
LAYLA
Move.
ROXANNE
THIS! THIS is a life sentence, irrevocable.
Layla fires a shot at Roxanne's feet. Roxanne flinches.
LAYLA
MOVE! That's my baby, MY girl!- I want-I want him to-I want my turn.
ROXANNE
THIS IS YOUR TURN! Don't give him to hell just yet, let his mind do him in.
INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY - LATE
Layla and DOCTOR observe Adrian's bandaged form through a viewing window.
DOCTOR
He's useless to any investigation. He can't whisper a name, identify a photo, write a clue, or even point a finger. Not a strange fingerprint, hair follicle or even a dead skin cell on this guy. He'll likely live out his life in some twisted recurring nightmare.
Layla walks away -
LAYLA
See that he lives forever Doctor.
INT. TAMARA'S HOME/BEDROOM - NIGHT
Roxanne leans forward planting a light kiss on the sleeping girl's forehead.
She tiptoes from the room, leaving a special necklace on a photo frame on her dresser.
INT/EXT VARIOUS COLORED BACKGROUNDS - NIGHT
Roxanne circles CHILD PREDATOR #2 (Dave), bound tight in a chair. Deep green b.g.
Badass truck travels down the Interstate, a road sign.
Roxanne attempts to duct tape the mouth of CHILD PREDATOR #3(Ben), he spits in her face. Purple b.g.
Traveling down the Interstate, another road sign.
Roxanne shears the sleeve of Child Predator #4 (ICEFOX)
INT. ROXANNE'S BADASS TRUCK - NIGHT
The radio blares the local news as Roxanne's headlights shine on the road ahead.
ANNOUNCER
The FBI has been called in on a bizarre case as a fifth repeat sex offender has been found completely incapacitated with incriminating evidence stapled across what remains of his face.
Roxanne etches a tally mark across four lines in her dash.
FADE OUT.
Credits roll with photos and names of actual child murder victims.

Magnificent Masking!
Hello again!
I want to send out a BIG thank you to all who participated in our mask making party last night at equipment checkout. Overall I would say it was a smashing success and fun to boot.
I was truly inspired by everyone's response to my choice for Adrian. You should all be aware that Rytis is a very busy man with a job and his own business so it will be imperative that we keep production on schedule to accomodate his needs - as he will be accomodating ours.
Everyone who auditioned has been offered a role in Life W/O Parole, and most have accepted - this is very exciting to me as everyone worked so hard in their auditions and they deserve BIG KUDOS! I cannot say enough about Tina Buckingham and the talent she brought to our auditions - she's a true gem to be appreciated in the MT film community.
PLEASE be sure to read the finalized script - I'll try to get it on the blog this weekend - if you haven't received a hard copy yet find Camdon or I and get one. We've added a great (I think) transition on pg 9 - scene 20 - that clears up some confusion that was brought to my attention. Oh yeah, the cinematographer likes it too.
We cast and lost a fabulous Roxanne in one fell swoop. We are not the only people who over-commit in this industry. I'm e-mailing every acting venue I can find a website or email address for in the state for help. Keep your ears open in case you come across a terrific mid to late 30s lady with attitude.
Next Friday's meeting we're back in Cheever room 214 at 4:10pm.
Your support has been super! 16 days till production and counting! There's still so much to do!

Greetings!
Hello! My name is Keith and I will be handling all sound aspects of this film. I am very excited because this project is, in my opinion, very sound-based (others re-affirm my suspicions). This is my first big step "up to bat" as a sound designer and I'm really looking forward to the challenge. I have a great support group that I know will help me when I have a question or two. I want to thank Colette and Camdon for letting me work on this project. I love working in a group like this because I have a responsibility to the group and I don't want to be "that guy." P.S....free t-shirt's and masks, not to mention Diane's cookin'!

Keeping you in the know
Hello to my wonderful team!
I cannot express in writing how well the auditions went last night. Everyone in the room experienced goosebumps more than once. Final decisions for the roles of Roxanne, Layla, Adrian, Doctor, Parole Review Board officer, and likely most of our Security Officers will be announced at our mask making session on Friday.
Speaking of which - For those of you (if there is anyone) who would rather not participate for various reasons - this is not a mandatory activity and you do not have to do it. However, there will be food and fun announcements so don't miss it if you can help it.
The design for the t-shirts has been turned in! Shirts will be distributed at one of our Friday meetings this month. I would be love for everyone to wear their shirt at least once a week throughout the semester.
BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!
19 days until production. The countdown has begun - the clock is ticking - and magic is happening in every department! Keep up the hard work and it will pay off in the end.
Lead or be Lunch!

Touching Base
Lets get ready to RUMBLE! It's Super Bowl Sunday, have you got all your ducks in a row? Poop in a group? Some of you may very well be hearing from me today to schedule a post-production meeting, touch base on how things are going, etc... I'll try to catch you before you're three sheets to the wind and I promise not to call during half time or the fourth quarter.
Don't forget about our mask making session this Friday at checkout - bring a backpack or something to rest your heads on.
I hear some of you are having philosophic discussions about the script - Keep it up! Explore your feelings regarding the questions being raised here. What if it were your kid? What if it were your parent? What if Adrian were a member of your family? How would you respond to circumstances beyond your control and how would you WANT to respond? These can be very different answers for every person.
Enjoy what's left of your weekend and hit the ground running Monday!

Special effects
I am the head of the special effects department for this film. My main goal is to express the internal demon which is hidden within the protagonist/antagonist through acts of vile savagery. To put it lightly, every human has the hidden gift that will allow them to kill another person (It justs needs to be freed from it's chains with a reasonable excuse). This story is about a mother seeking revenge for the murder of her child, something every GOOD mother in the world would do. I'm not a mother nor a father, but I due have family. A family I love very deeply. And there is not a soul in this world I would not happily rip apart piece by piece (very very slowly, to hear them beg for death) to defend them. You can say that is my connection to this story. Don't get me wrong I'm all for peace and love and all that good stuff, there's just people in this world who I feel should be shown what their internal organs look like for their crimes. So in conclusion I say defend what you love and let the madness begin.

Art Department
Just a note about production. I feel this movie will be the best thing to come out of this program ever. Well at least to this point., who knows what the future holds. This film feels special to me because of it's intentions and implications. This hard hitting in your face drama will work on screen because of its stomach turing content and because of it's all star crew. To the people making this movie I salute you all. I wouldn't trade any of you for anyone else. You are all masters of your craft and I am personaly thrilled to say I will be on the same set as you all working towards the same goal. Speaking on behalf of the art department,

Quick Update!
Good Morning my beauties!
We are moving 4:00pm Friday meetings to Cheever Hall room 214 -
We need to figure out if we will be using Jere or Elizabeth's camper/trailer and how we will be transporting it.
We still need an assistant to Marc Boyer.
We still need a full time crafts services person - I'll be talking to Mary Neff about this.
Auditions last night were entirely encouraging! We have some fabulous talent in this area and I encourage everyone to keep this in mind when you're casting for your projects. We will be holding a second audition night - Tuesday - February 6th at 7:15 pm. If you want to send anyone our way be sure they get the reading ahead of time. They are available below in the earlier blogs.
Every step we take in this project sends me back to cloud nine people! You guys ROCK!!!!

Where does "lead or be lunch" come from?
We have the lawnmower (i hope we get to use it) and the garbage can.
What's with the "lead or be lunch" statement some have asked me. It's my motto and directly linked to this story.
Every morning somewhere in Africa a lion wakes up and knows it must run faster than the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. Every morning somewhere in Africa a gazelle wakes up and knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or they will die a horrible death.
The moral of the story: It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or the gazelle, when the sun comes up, you better be running. If our efforts are half-assed, our results will be half-assed. Often we have to get up earlier, work harder and skip the leisure time. Are you driven to get everything you want out of life?
Lead or be Lunch, it's all about ambition.

thoughts and a Quick Quote
I'll be working on the basement getting it ready for set dress - Cam and I had a great meeting w/ Jere, Kara and Monica last night. Marc and Jere must get together and discuss the logistics of hiding limbs and other issues. BTW - We have a twin mattress we can destroy! WOOHOO! Carry on artists!

karma
I am entirely inspired by the dedication I am already seeing from you, my fabulous crew, in pre-production. It means a great deal to have as many as possible making it to these meetings. I know some of you don't have a lot to interject at this time but your presence at our meetings is important to me.
I hope this is becoming your project as much as it has been mine over the last few years. I'm trying very hard to share it, to be a good collaborator. Many of you have been complimenting me on how hard I'm working and how much Camdon and I are getting done. THANK YOU! We really need that encouragement right now deep in the throes of securing locations, casting talent and getting the paperwork done. Your support and excitement mean so much to us at this stage and I hope we can give the same to you throughout this process when your roles become more demanding.
I can't help but think about the good karma I'm constantly feeling surrounding this project and sometimes I wonder how that can be considering the subject matter. But then I remember, the very essence of this story, what it all boils down to is this...
The safety of children.
How could we not have great karma?
Have a great weekend.

Mythological background
Have you heard there are no new stories? Just new versions of the stories we already know? Every story told has its roots deep in in something that came before and sometimes it only resonates with our subconscious. Life W/O Parole's storyline reeks of mythological metaphors.
Once Upon a Time...
Demeter, the Goddess of Agriculture had a beautiful daughter, Persephone, and they were very close.
Hades, the God of the Underworld, had gambled with Persephone's father Zeus and lost. Zeus had put Persephone in the pot.
When it came time for Hades to claim his new bride, no one had informed either Persephone or Demeter of their ensuing separation.
Hades placed a lovely flower in a conspicious place for Persephone to come upon and be drawn to. The iris is still sometimes referred to today as the flower of deception. Hades burst from the earth driving four horses and a golden chariot. He swept the girl up and descended again into the underworld to make him his wife.
Demeter was devastated to find her beloved daughter missing. She went out into the world to search for Persephone. Her absence from her duties as the Goddess of Agriculture caused years of drought. She stalked the earth, in search of the culprit deserving of her wrath and vengeance.
At one point Persephone learned of her mother's search, and expressed her desire to Hades to see her mother again. Hades heard her plea, but before accomodating the young girl's request he offered her a pomegranante, infused with an elixer that made it impossible for her to live in the human world for more than two months at a time or she would die. Therefore tying the girl to the Underworld forever.
This is a mild and short version of the story, from memory. I encourage everyone to google images of Persephone, Demeter, Hades, read their tales. Also look at Themis, Athena, and Kali.

ADRIAN'S AUDITION READING
ADRIAN - REVIEW BOARD HEARING
You have been incarcerated for six years of your life sentence without parole. This is your 2nd incarceration for the same offense, the abduction, torture, rape and murder of a teenage girl.
Rumor has it that felons are being released on parole due to an extreme shortage of prison space and you have been called before a review board of 5 people for an undisclosed reason.
Somehow, the mother of the girl you murdered has seated herself in the room, 25 feet directly behind the chair provided for you. The sheriff responsible for your arrest is also seated behind you.
CORRECTIONAL REVIEW OFFICER: Mr. Drake. We are here because a review of your prison records since incarceration reveals an exemplary effort on your part to rehabilitate yourself. Would you please explain for the panel why and go into detail regarding your experience in the process.
ADRIAN: Thank you for this opportunity to appear before the board. It's been a long road to recovery as I've participated in the counseling program offered by Dr. Weinstein four days a week. I've never missed a session, even when I was feeling a little under the weather. I think he'll verify the great strides we've made in my efforts to become a harmless and productive member of society. Even if that society is limited to the state penitentiary. Even though I have no chance for parole, I want to understand why I was driven to hurt young girls. I don't want to die in here as the monster that was incarcerated for a terrible crime. I've spent a considerable amount of time with Father Maxwell, the Prison chaplain. With his guidance through bible study I've turned my life over to Christ and prayer has saved my soul. I know that my sins will never be forgiven with man but I've been washed in the blood of the lamb and that's more freedom than I've ever experienced in my life. I know I deserve to be here. I'm so sorry to the families that I've caused such pain and agony. In a million years and a million tongues I could never express the remorse I feel for my actions. I can stand here before you and with the greatest conviction say that I am no longer the man that I was six years ago.
CORRECTIONAL REVIEW OFFICER: You said you wanted to understand why you were driven to hurt young girls, can you share that with us and what have you done to change this about yourself?
ADRIAN: If you'll give me a second, this is difficult to address... For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with mythology, Hades to be specific. Hades abducted Persephone into the underworld and made her his queen. Mandy... when I saw her, she was the personification of my image of Persephone. Then Isabelle, she was so vibrant. I've undergone extensive psychotherapy to aid in my seperation from this alterego.
CORRECTIONAL REVIEW OFFICER: There are no girls here, what makes you think you can enter a world full of vibrant and innocent Persephones and control yourself?
ADRIAN: It's only a story. Persephone doesn't exist. These were stories to explain the unexplainable. The seasons, the storms, all things that science explains for us now. Hades was nothing more than an explanation for where the dead go and who runs that place. I urge you to visit with Dr. Walters on my progress regarding the subject.
